180gr vs 165gr in 40 cal. This is a discussion on 180gr vs 165gr in 40 cal within the Ammo Dump forums, part of the Firearm Forum category; I just read this article (link) , and wanted to get feedback from the forum. Apologies if this topic has been beaten to death.
The 180gr .40 makes a bigger hole (permanent damage) than does the 165gr HST or any other 165gr bullet. The same is true of the .45, the 230 grain rules and the HST +P is king and in 9mm, the 147 rules and the HST is king.
After a year shooting an XD-9 Service, I recently moved to an XD-40 service. Put in a Don's guide rod with 22# spring. The first rounds I shot were Federal 40 180 grain FMJ. Used them up and recently bought a box of Winchester 40 165 grain FMJ. Went out and shot about 30 rounds today in between snow storms.

At-home bullet testing: Try it today – For example, I used a Glock 22 to test 40 S&W and .357 SIG cartridges (using a Lone Wolf Distributors barrel). It is safe to say that my results would be similar to most other users using a Glock.
The only reason I prefer 124-127gr over 147gr in 9mm is because I can't justify in my mind losing 200-250 fps to gain 20 or 23 grains. But the difference is smaller with regard to 165gr vs 180gr in .40.
Aug 12, 2012 · The 40 S&W, though descending from the 10mm, was born and designed as a 180gr JHP loading for law enforcement and thus most pistols chambered in 40S&W were designed around the 180gr bullet. The 180gr loading works very well and is the weight chosen most often by main stream law enforcement.
Nov 01, 2007 · I picked up some test ammo at a local gun show from a well known reloading company. I was looking for .40 S&W and I picked up their 165gr/1050fps and their 180gr/950fps reloads. The power factor comes out to 173250 vs 171000 respectively. They consider their 165gr reload to be their IPSC Majo.
